Sale of Elmyr’s Art
These lithographs are from a box suite titled ‘Homage’, dedicated to the artists who influenced Elmyr’s art. In his pastiches of the modern masters, we can admire the work of an actor rendering his interpretation of what he sees, feels, and thinks, in the spirit of the original. It’s what has animated figurative art for more than 500 years. This is the resonance Elmyr enjoyed with his contemporaries or near-contemporaries that allowed viewers a sense of kinship, familiarity and believability, a marriage of talent and opportunity, his offerings garnered a ‘look’ of authenticity. The perfect storm that fueled his decades-long illicit career, earned him his notoriety. It was a crown of thorns, of sorts, though, his path to recognition bore the odium of criminality, he believed the merit of his art, his legacy, would stand the test of time.
Art has a long subversive streak. It’s unsurprising that it breeds outliers and rule breakers. De Hory was one.
